5. Further Questions
It came as no surprise to me that both Holmes’ consultation with his index and our lunch passed very quickly. Since leaving Limehouse, I had sensed that old excitement in him that meant he now understood the case fully, and lacked only the final proof in order to complete it. His restlessness - he could hardly remain still for a moment - the flint-like set of his jaw and the keenness in his eyes betrayed this also, and I felt myself swept up in his enthusiasm.
“Tell me, Watson,” he said as we sat once more in a hansom, “is there a restaurant or tea room opposite or near to the Foulkes’ residence?”
“Not that I can recall.”
“Perhaps a gentleman’s outfitters or somewhere where we will not look out of place if we linger?”
I shook my head. “As I remember, the entire street is made up of three-storey houses.”
“A pity,” Holmes said. “I was hoping that we could conduct our observations from concealment, but as it is, things will have to be arranged a little differently.”
“But I understood that we were to visit the Foulkes’ home?”
“That was purely an assumption on your part. You will recall that I have not confirmed it.”
“What are we doing here, then?” I asked as the hansom came to rest. “This is not the place, Holmes, it is around the next corner.”
“I am aware of that, from your description.”
We sent the hansom on its way and he led me on a short walk around the nearby streets, as if he wished to familiarise himself with their situation. After about ten minutes we arrived in the street we sought. He selected a tall building which looked as if it had once been a place of business, a short way down from the Foulkes’ home on the opposite side of the street.
“My index did not fail me,” was Holmes” only comment.
I saw his purpose immediately. Two steps led up to a deep doorway from where we could observe the Foulkes’ house without being seen. We retreated into the shadows and positioned ourselves conveniently.
“What are we watching for, Holmes.” I asked.
“For a glimpse of Mr. Foulkes, naturally.”
“We could knock at the front door, and I could introduce you.”
I saw him smile, faintly in the gloom. “But that would not do, Watson. At least, not yet.”
We waited for almost an hour, during which no callers approached the house. At one point an elderly gentleman appeared through the double doors behind us, looking rather surprised to find two strangers loitering in concealment upon the steps. Neither of us made any remark however, and the man gave us a harsh glance before stepping into the street.
No more than ten minutes later, Holmes broke the silence suddenly. “Not long now. That house is situated in such a fashion that it is possible to see into almost every room when, as now, the curtains are open.
